riveting

The various Italian criminal organisations have always attracted much attention.We all like to read about them.Unfortunately,few books are worth a second look.Some owe their fame to a screened version like THE GODFATHER films,acknowledged masterpieces based on Mario Puzo's forgettable novel.Away from the American mafia ,some like John Dickie's COSA NOSTRA,in its Sicilian setting, are wonderfully informative and entertaining.But in my eyes the award must go to Roberto Saviano's disturbing,harrowing story of the Napolitan Camorra.Brilliantly written,it reads like a first class thriller and yet it is all true.When you think that the writer is only in his twenties,...

Depressing but defiant

The first thing that surprised me about this book was the scope. I'd seen the film, which limits itself to a few characters and locations, but as the subtitle on the book's cover makes clear this isn't just about some gangsters extorting money from shop owners, but a vast global economic empire which touches the lives of pretty much everyone on the planet in some way or another. The first couple of chapters, about the port of Naples, Chinese tailors and the fashion industry are a real eye-opener.It's also a very personal and angry book. Rather than studying events from a distance, Saviano was born in this area, personally investigates and witnesses some of the events described, and incorporates anecdotes from his own life. He also manages to tease out the philosophical implications in an elegant and perceptive way. A couple of the chapters about squabbling amongst various bosses was less compelling to me, but overall it's an impressive and, it has to be said, monumentally depressing book, even as Saviano tries to end it on a note of hope and defiance.

A matter of entrepreneurship

After reading this book, I couldn't stop myself from thinking what would be Italy nowadays like, if camorra's entrepreneurial skills had been used for creating regular legal businesses rather than criminal activities. The complexity of the organization is at the same time amazing and shocking.
