Annie Leibovitz's extraordinary career took off in San Francisco in 1970 when she first submitted a portfolio to Rolling Stone magazine. By 1973 she was the magazine's chief photographer. Since 1983 Annie Leibovitz has worked closely with Vanity Fair, who will be producing a special music issue to coincide with the book. Her subjects include Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, Al Green, Bruce Springsteen, Bryan Adams, Dolly Parton, Marvin Gaye, Chuck Berry and even Philip Glass. She has created a body of new work for the book, covering the landscape of American music - the juke joints of the Delta, Graceland, B. B. King at his hometown of Indianola in Mississippi and the Carter family in Virginia. The book is a tribute to a great culture in its widest form by the photographer who has understood more than anybody the power of the iconic image.

Reflecting humanity

Primo Levi, Italian Jew, survivor of Auschwitz, author of "The Periodic Table" (21 stories each connected by a chemical element to tale), died at the age of 68. The official record has it that his fall from his three-storied apartment was a suicide. Some of his friends believed he killed himself others were convinced that he had already died 40 years before in Auschwitz. His life and death are relevant to those who enjoy his written work because they were pieces that aligned with the stories he wrote and the thoughts that he mused in his essays. Primo Levi was a writer whose thoughts drill into the deepest depths of intellectual darkness to, as he described his own approach in "Translating Kafka" (one of the essays in The Mirror Maker) to light. Yet somehow, reading his stories and essays, we might find it difficult to separate the emotions that drove him this way and that from the clarity of his analysis of life. His was a difficult mind to access and comprehend, but he was a writer of clarity and brilliance. It is this kind of admixture that makes writers like Primo Levi so fascinating. The stories and essays in "The Mirror Maker" were all very short, very clear and scarily thought provoking. My favourite essays from this collection were "Translating Kafka" and "Bacteria Roulette", and of the stories, "They were made to be Together" and "Through the Walls". The reader will find his work a mirror reflecting aspects of Primo Levi's life as well as his own; and we should understand that the paths life has for each of us are more myriad than the Cretan Labyrinths of the Minotaur. We must not only feel our way out but also think our way out. After all, as the author wrote (in "The Moon and the Man") that man is strong because "of the many weapons nature offered the animals, he opted for the brain".

Human and humane

Wonderful, and deeply intelligent and sympathetic. The biography reads like a great novel. It is an enormous achievement, so full of understanding and information. Carole Angier illuminates Primo Levi`s life and times and our own. Brilliant, superb - am only in the early parts of the book and now look forward to reading it slowly and with care, as the story deserves. My sincere thanks to the author for producing such a remarkable work.

Three generations of women in one family, the first an Itali

Rendered in a convincing realism, Helen Barolini 's novel depicts a search for definition as woman and American through three generations, starting with the eponymous Umbertina. One may justifiably assume that the author has lived her subject--so sensitively does she enter and depict it. I would emphatically recommend this book to any American of Italian descent who wishes to understand the experience of his or her forebears and the need of successive generations to come to terms with the past. But that is not to limit its audience. At base, this is an American book, well worth the attention of those willing to feel the struggle, victory, and loss involved in the acquisition of an AMerican identity.

Umbertina exposes the heart of Italian American women

I found the book to be an accurate and stirring portrayal of what it is like to be an Italian -American woman. In the second generation I still recognize the attitudes, feelings and traditions of my ancestors in this book as well as the struggle to affirm our talents as women. I highly recommend it.

Not worth the time-too much like a romance novel

While the first chapter was very interesting as it took the woman for whom the book was named from her birthplace in Italy to her new home in America, the second and third chapters became essentially a romance novel. I am a third generation Italian-American and I did not feel moved by that aspect of the story like some of the other reviewers. The first chapter did not make the book. Not worth the time and effort.

Against the backdrop of the Good Friday Accords of 1998, this 1999 thriller explores several groups which have reason to want the peace process to fail so that they can accomplish their own agendas. Partisans of the Republic and partisans of the Union have come to an agreement regarding peace and power-sharing, but the new Ulster Freedom Brigade believes that all sides have sold out, and they are willing to murder Catholics and Protestants alike as they continue the sectarian violence. At the same time an international group, the secret Society for International Development and Cooperation, consisting of powerful business and security officials from around the world, decides to use the uncertainties in Ulster to further their own business interests.Michael Osbourne, formerly with the CIA, is lured out of retirement to promote the peace process and to guard his father-in-law, Douglas Cannon, who has just been appointed US ambassador to the Court of St. James. Osbourne has experienced personal danger, having escaped an assassination attempt the previous year, and he knows his way around Ireland. The Society, however, contacts the man who previously tried to kill him, a Russian known only as October, and hires him to stop Osbourne and the Ambassador and end the peace process.Though the mystery associated with Ulster is exciting and filled with authentic detail, including some of the real characters associated with the Accords, the novel wanders into other, unrelated areas. The Society for International Development and Cooperation includes powerful and amoral renegades in high positions in the US, Israel, the UK, and other countries, and as the action shifts to Egypt, France, Greece, and other countries, the subplots shift the focus away from Ireland and into an international nether-world.The staccato sentence structure, while effective for conveying action, gets wearisome here because there is so much action, not all of it related to Ireland, and Silva's descriptive abilities, so obvious in some of his other novels, are subordinated here to the action. One gets some insight into October and how he became the assassin he is, but Osbourne, while clever, remains somewhat indistinct from other thriller "heroes." This Silva novel lacks the unity and intense characterization one associates with the Gabriel Allon series, and Ari Shamron, Allon's mentorm is a sinister SIDC character here. Still, the novel is fun to read, a fast-paced thriller which does give some insights into the complexities of Ulster and the difficulties of the peace process. Mary Whipple

The Computer Science Bible

Amazing book. It covers an enormous amount of content, can be picked up and read from almost any page, and explains everything in a way both a lay-man and an expert will find understandable and interesting.

Great book!

One of the best books I have ever read. This book is suitable for people of all level of competence (even for very beginners) and thanks to its well organized structure, it is easy for the reader to identify the chapters of interest. The book is written in plain English and the authors give, to the side of the page, a definition to each new keyword used for the first time in the text.The book consists in more than 800 pages and treats a wide range of topics. I definitely recommend this reading for anyone interested in gaining knowledge in computer organization.

I am a 3rd year Computer and Electronics Systems student at strathclyde Uni.This is a fantastic book to by if you need to know about computer archtecture and is well worth the money.
