Suppressed by the Fascists, Pavese emerged from the shadows to become one of the great post-War writers in Europe. The Moon and the Bonfire is a moving evocation of an Italian childhood. The more autobiographical Devil In The Hills is the most personal of Pavese's novels, an elegiac celebration of lost youth set in the landscape of his own boyhood, the hills, vineyards and villages of Piedmont. The Political Prisoner echoes Pavese's own arrest and imprisonment in Calabria for his writings in the anti-fascist magazine La Cultura. Among Women Only, Pavese's last novel describing post-war Italy, was filmed and won the prestigious Strega prize.
