An exposé of greed and barbarism

Zero Zero Zero is perhaps the definitive text on the criminal cocaine industry. Saviano has produced a work which is all-encompassing. It starts in Mexico with a look at the cartels there and how they came into being, a story that is illustrated with continual sickening violence. Then there are chapters on Columbia, the ‘Ndrangetta mafia in Italy, the Russian mafia, money laundering, shipping – pretty much every aspect of the trade.Along the way we are introduced to an enormous cast of characters, many of whom have long Spanish names. It is impossible to keep up with them all, but it doesn’t really matter. The come and go, live and die, are replaced by others.To read Zero Zero Zero is to wallow in a depravity and barbarism that only humankind seems able to produce. To describe the murderers and torturers as bestial is to do animals a great disservice. It is an immensely sad book and Saviano appears to be a very sad author. Who wouldn’t be, condemned for the last decade to live under armed guard, cut off from family and friends, unable to live a normal life following very real death threats.Quite apart from Saviano’s encyclopaedic knowledge of his subject matter, what really stood out for me was the quality of the writing. This isn’t just journalism, this is literature. The tone, word choice and style are superb. He even includes short, experimental texts on different aspects of the drug cocaine which are all powerful. The narrative is gripping, although it could be argued that the sheer weight of material sometimes defeats the author’s attempts to organise it all. It is a bit like a jigsaw puzzle where each piece plays a small part in constructing an over-arching picture whilst only having limited significance in itself.I am now tempted to read a couple of other texts on the same subject. Not because I think I will learn any more. Sadly, it is just out of morbid fascination. Come the end of the book, even Saviano is suggesting that there can be no end to the cycle of violence unless something truly radical is attempted. That can only be legalisation, surely a lesser evil.

Saviano at his very best

A compelling book. Beautifully written. It will have you "hooked" from the very first chapter. Gritty and incisive it has no room for flowery narrative. An accurate and factual account of the nightmarish world of narcotrafficking spanning every continent.
