5A True C20th Classic

This volume in fact contains two separate novellas. The title piece is quite simply a twentieth century classic. In its understated way and with a marvellous economy of means it gradually and hypnotically builds up a totally convincing picture of a political exile's thoughts, feelings and perceptions of a southern Italian coastal backwater during the fascist era. Pavese has a quite unique sensibility and I cannot think of anyone to compare him to. Carlo Levi? Primo Levi? Sciascia? Not really. Wonderful! If only it were longer! But there is the bonus of the second novella...

The translation reads like a parody of a poor translation. What exactly is to 'hide things up'? Who says 'Have a bathe' for 'Have a swim'?
