I've never given an Osprey book less than five stars but 'Russia's War in Afghanistan' is significantly below their usual standard; it illustrates all the pitfalls of trying to write history whilst it's still happening. It's also wildly partisan: author David Isby's strident Cold War-era anti-communism is a constant drumbeat, and his corresponding tendency to romanticise the Afghan mujahideen as plucky, Kipling-esque figures (common at the time) is especially ironic now that NATO are fighting their sons, and their most famous alumnus has turned out to be one Osama Bin Laden. The one saving grace is Ron Volstad's (of Dragon Models fame) colour plates but given that this book came out in 1986, surely it's time for a revised and updated edition. It's certainly not worth paying silly money for a secondhand edition.

A horrific book full of errors such as the soviets using chemical weapons in Afghanistan. This guy doesn't have a clue what he's talking about. He even calls Muslims' Moslems which is a derogatory term. Never mind the spelling mistakes. This author must have been in a fairy land.
