Italian author Primo Levi's two books of poetry, "Shema" and "Ad Ora Incerta", are collected here for the first time in English translation. Levi's poems concentrate on World War II, a period of his life when he was incarcerated in Auschwitz, and the psychological after-effects of his survival. Other books by Primo Levi now available in English translation include "The Periodic Table", "If This is a Man", "The Truce", "If Not Now, When?", "Moments of Reprieve" and "The Wrench".

4The comforts of a noble soul.
By Mr. G. Morgan
I do not think Levi a great poet but a great man and a truly great writer of non fiction, whose best novels are extremely fine. This volume is remarkable for the way he manages to use gentle language to characterize emotive situations or ideas. Those familiar with the superlative 'If this is a Man' will know how creditably, how charitably, he avoids extreme statements; his refuge is in a humane stoicism that is immensely touching. His poems are not declamatory like, say, Paul Celan's (a favourite of mine) and Levi is a less ambitious poet. He seems to me to be using language to still the impulse to react with unkindness; his refuge is in the understated, the meditative and the modest. Everything he writes is a valuable contribution to literature of Totalitarianism, reading him alongside the great Anna Akhmatova is fascinating. He is not in her class as a poet - few are - but it is a rewarding exercise that restores one's faith in humanity after the deadly Concentration Camps (NOT Death Camps, those were to the East, all 3 of them) and the Gulag. Adorno stated "After Auschwitz, no more poetry" to which this is a worthy riposte.
