There are far more complete collections of Crowley's diaries available and it should be noted that this particular book covers only one year of AC's life. The year is 1923 and in any Chronology of Crowley's life, the only notable events listed for that year are the death of Raoul Loveday and the eviction by Mussolini from the Abbey of Thelema. Unfortunately for the reader, these events occurred prior to the beginning of this book. This collection of diaries is still fascinating though.Herein you will discover insights into Crowley's relationships with those characters who turn up in all of his biographies, records of numerous magical operations, hundreds of 'Yi King' consultations and an unbelievable amount of drugs being ingested. Crowley dictates 'Hag' ('Confessions'), several poems, an abortive attempt at a commentary on Liber Al and various other essays of interest. It is impossible to mention everything of interest as so much seems to happen in the short time recorded in these diaries.The editor's footnotes are extremely valuable and often amusing. The indices give a list of abbreviations used in the diaries, various Qabalistic and Tarot information, a list of magical mottoes and a record of Crowley's struggle with Heroine.This book will be of interest to anyone interested in Crowley, though as I said above, there are far more complete diary collections available which would be preferred over this one.

The Magical Diaries present us with a warts and all glimpse into the daily life of Aleister Crowley during the year 1923; a year in which Crowley had been banished from his Abbey of Thelema in Cefalu, Sicily, by order of Mussolini. These diaries record in detail the `Great Beast's' magical workings and the influences and results obtained. He writes down his thoughts on the Book of the Law and its commentaries; his use of drugs to achieve altered states of consciousness and his investigations into the practice of sex magick; also his use of the I Ching for general divination purposes. In fact, the diaries reveal a very `human' individual with doubts thrown into self-analysis and unsure of his next move; a man subjected to constant ill health that isn't afraid to laugh at himself and his failings. But, through all of this personal introspection we see a man dedicated towards his spiritual journey and tirelessly working towards its conclusion. Fascinating!

Contains Poems never previously published. This is an excellent book, which tells of his day-to-day thoughts on major problems that needed filtered through his mind to absorb his peculiar method of Solution to the complex rivals of knots, which the Government, and other equal frauds have fallen into. Also, Sex Magick operations for various ends are added, useful to study the correct astrological phases when success dawned. I can recall one particular time when he invoked Aiwass. He is always doing some form of the Great Work, and this Diary deserves the attention of all who wish to penetrate the Genius of this enigmatical man's Psyche, in larger degrees then most of his average books will permit.
