The prose style of this novel is stilted and flat. Maybe this is just a bad translation because the story itself is haunting.Two convicts are released from prison - one a town boy from Milan and one a peasant boy. They go to the peasnt's family home, where they are preparing for the harvest. The landscape shimmers with an oppressive heat and the town boy tries to make some sense of the brutal lives of the peasants. He becomes involved with one of the peasant boy's sisters, with tragic consequences.This is a compelling story, let down by its verbal style.
