By Cambridge Don
I was very fortunate to have had P C Tung as one of my lecturers at the School of Oriental and African Studies many years ago. This was the textbook we used. It was aimed at first year university students and some of the grammatical explanations, though clear, might be less accessible for beginners without the benefit of a teacher. This is more than made up for by the actual language presented. Each chapter starts with an introductory story then a dialogue and vocab list. After an explanation of the grammar, examples are given in the form of 'speech patterns'. These are formula-like patterns of everyday speech. There are many of them in each chapter enabling plenty of repetition. The chapter ends with various test questions. The translation tests come without answers but these are pretty much clear from the text. All the Chinese is in pinyin but you should look at the companion character books which have the entire text in characters (I personally prefer the 'full' version rather than 'simplified').Although the language is occasionally dated (I don't think you call people 'comrade' these days) there is no real criticism one can make of this method. I believe it is considered one of the best methods for beginners in the academic world. The book has plenty of material to work with, up to about a thousand word vocabulary. The pace at SOAS was a chapter a week, about 20 to 60 words as the course progressed (plus, the characters, making twice the work at least!) Obviously you adapt this to your own pace for self tuition. As well as the character book, you might see if SOAS still do the recorded version. This is 11 hours long (not the single cassette version), covering the entire book! Check the University site for this.Overall, this is about the best book for beginners with a serious need to learn Chinese.Update, 2nd March 2015: I did contact SOAS about the complete set of recordings but it seems they are no longer available. They were originally for students at SOAS though I did buy a set a while after leaving there. Seems now though they are no longer available, a pity. The book is still excellent though. Also, it appears as if Routeledge offer a free download of the MP3 audio for this book.

Chinese is a hard language to learn for the beginner. But once you get over the basic hurdle of pronciation speaking becomes very easy. This set teaches characters and speaking at the smae pace - characters are hard all the time, but it'll always be like that.Although slightly out of date (some terms refer to comrade or communes!!!) it is an excellent series if you are prepared to put in some hard work - Chinese will never be easy if you learn it fully!!! This series is particuraly good for rigorously and enjoyably teacing proper grammer - essential for an English speaker.Expect to spend about 10 hours a week on studying, that means you will complete about 1 chapter per week, and on completion of the book will know 600 characters, have an excellent grip on the language, and will be able to communicate about most things, you will certaily be able to speak on a reasonable basis with a native speaker.Remember Chinese is not an easy language to learn, but it's immensly rewarding if you put in the work. It's recommended you find someone in your home town - i'm sure a native Chinese will be glad to help you if you work hard!

By Amazon Customer
We are using this book in my language course. As a absolute beginner I have to say this is the coolest book you can get.Together with audio is it complete turn-key solution for those who want to start with chinese. Only one thing which made me to give 4 stars is that they uses so much communists term (OK, this book is not new so I do respect).I do recommend to start with a teacher not self-studying. You have to get over the pronunciation, radicals etc...and advice from exeprienced teacher is only a plus.So if you are looking for nice and easy to start complete book and audio. Here it is!!!!EnjoyPavel KotyzaCzech Republic
